Gustave Simo

University of Dschang, Cameroon

Gustave Simo received his PhD in 2001 from the University of Yaoundé 1 in Cameroon and his Habilitation in 2015 from the “Université de Montpellier 2”in France. As PhD student of the Molecular Biology Laboratory of OCEAC, he received IRD graduate student awards. After his PhD, he was visiting Scientist at UMR177-IRD (Montpellier, France; 2003) and Bay Paul Center of the Marine Biological Laboratory of Woods Hole (USA; 2004). He was also postdoctoral fellow of AUF at UMR177-IRD of Montpellier from 2005 to 2006 and Alexander Von Humboldt fellow at the Division of Functional Genome Analysis (B070) of German Cancer Research Center of Heidelberg from 2007 to 2009. He was Senior Scientist at the Medical Research Center and collaborator at BIBL of Faculty of Medicine and Biomedical Science (University of Yaoundé 1) from 2002 to 2010. In March 2010, he joined the Department of Biochemistry of the Faculty of Science of the University of Dschang as lecturer before be promoted as senior lecturer two years after. In 2013, he created the Molecular Parasitology and Entomology Unit within the Department of Biochemistry of the Faculty of Science and he is heading this unit since almost five years. He was also visiting scientist at the Division of Functional Genome Analysis (B070) of German Cancer Research Center of Heidelberg in 2012 and 2014. He is founding member of the African Research Network for Neglected Tropical Diseases (ARNTD) and Management Board member of this network since five years. He headed the basic research group within this network. He is also member of other research networks including TrypanoGEN, Ramatron-V and the “French Research Network for Neglected Tropical Diseases”. He has established strong collaborations with several European and African research institutions including UMR-177 (IRD, Montpellier France), B070 Division of the German Cancer Research Center of Heidelberg, the Free University of Berlin in Germany, the University of Bremen, the University of Glasgow, the CIRDES in Burkina Faso, the University of Makerere in Uganda, the University of Masuku in Gabon, the University of Kinshasa and the INRB of Kinshasa. He has published more than 50 papers in peer review journals and he is also reviewer of several scientific journals. He has served as referee for “Franco-Suisse (ANR-SNF) projects”, Research Foundation Flanders (FWO) projects and ARNTD’ small grants. He has been awarded several research grants including for instance the “European Foundation Initiative for Neglected Tropical Diseases”, the “Institutional Research Support Fund” of the University of Dschang (2017), the “Jeune Equipe de Recherche Associée à l’IRD” (2016). His research is basically on neglected tropical diseases involving field studies and basic research in different fields of Molecular Parasitology and Entomology. He is expert on animal reservoir and trypanotolerance in human African trypanosomiasis and has strong experience on Neglected tropical diseases.
