The TrypanoGEN Network

An interdisciplinary research team

A major objective of TrypanoGEN is to unite scientists from across Africa in order to integrate activities and combine complementary expertise.

This integration is capitalising on existing resources and will facilitate rationalisation of future infrastructure developments and research activities. The network consists of parasitologists, geneticists, genome analysts, clinicians, statistician, bioinformaticians and ethicists who are collaborating to maximise the use of existing sample collections, metadata, resources and expertise. These individuals are united by the common goal of further understanding the genetics underlying Human African Trypanosomiasis.

The 'hub and spokes' network architecture

The network consists of three hubs, one in Uganda (Makerere University); one in Burkina Faso (the Centre International de Recherche Developpement sur L’Elevage en Zone Sub-humide (CIRDES)) and another in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Institut National de Recherche Biomedicale (INRB)).

The hub institutions are acting as centres for sample and clinical data collection and storage and are providing training in diagnosis and sample phenotyping. The three hubs are centred around existing infrastructure and expertise. Each of the hubs in turn is linked to between one and three further spokes spanning East and West Africa. In addition, a number of institutions in Europe countries are providing a supportive role in the network's activities.
